How to Ship Small Electronics Safely

How to Ship Small Electronics Safely

Electronics and technology run the world. No matter where you are, there would always be some ground-breaking technology being discovered at the other end of the globe. It is at this time that shipping electronics goes from being a luxury to a necessity.

However, the process is not as modest as sending the latest piece of couture from the runway. Electronics, due to their sensitive nature and fragility, pose significant challenges during transportation and movement, especially the smaller ones.

So, whether you’re in charge of the latest shipment of iPhones or are taking care of the new PlayStation, here are some tips, tricks and tactics that Tigerpak uses to ensure complete safety in transit.

1. Select the appropriate box

The box that protects your electronics should be nothing less of a fortress. To truly safeguard the integrity of the device, we suggest going for box-in-box packaging. It offers a dual-layer of defence against any undue shocks or the occasional rough handling. Our first call is always wooden corrugated boxes.

These boxes differ from normal cardboard boxes. Corrugated boxes consist of 3 layers of paper which include an inside liner, an outside liner and fluting with a ruffled shape. This shape runs between the two layers and then is glued together for complete protection.

Impervious against a 200-lbs pressure, the burst-resistant walls make it apt for heavy-duty shipping.

2. Fill in the spaces

Yes, shipping electronics in bubble wraps is fun, but you mean serious business, don’t you? With the box-in-box technique, you are bound to have open spaces between the electronics and their packaging structure.

Unless you want the devices to keep tossing and tumbling along the way, cushioning the tech pieces is probably the best idea. Air pillows are designed for this very task. They prevent your items from moving around or hitting a corner which can damage most shipments.

While you have the option of packing peanuts, these pillows are nicer to the environment and won’t cause a mess when you open your shipment.

3. Insure Your Shipment

Protecting yourself from undue liabilities is as important as protecting electronics. To create an insurance cover, research extensively about the various policies at your disposal along with their minute terms and conditions. It is imperative to check whether the items in your package are a part of the insurance coverage or not.

Ordinarily, some companies don’t cover –

  • LCD screens and monitors

  • Televisions

  • Laptops

  • Mobile phones without signature confirmations

Once you’ve understood the conditions that work in your favour, keep a close note of them for any emergencies. Furthermore, clicking a picture pre-shipment and pre-packing is also a great way to secure yourself in the long run.

4. Specially Protect the Batteries

Lithium-ion batteries, while shipping electronics that contain them, become sensitive to heat and static electricity. Therefore, you need to be extra careful when packaging them in. Thanks to the global shipping standards, the retailing manufacturers take the necessary precautions while designing their original box.

Nevertheless, if the batteries are being sent separately, it is wise to cover all exposed terminals with an insulated and non-conductive material to avoid any short circuits.

5. Segregate the Cords and Accessories

A device hardly comes as a standalone piece. There are a plethora of charging cords and accessories that are coupled to suit its particular functionalities.

For shipping electronics, you should always separate the extras. This will prevent confusion in transit and also when the recipient receives their item. By bundling your cords, you can also prevent them from being tangled or damaged while being shipped. If you were to label the cables, this would ensure the user is able to connect their electronic device faster.

Separating the accessories also mitigates the risk of them rubbing or bumping together, thus avoiding any damages. It also allows you to differentiate the packaging material according to the specific sensitivities of the various parts.

6. Study the Regulations

We wish things were as easy as calling up a friend at the customs office and getting everything cleared. In reality, shipping electronics comes with a whole lot of prerequisites, compliances and legal proceedings.

Both international and domestic standards must be paid attention to in the departing and the recipient area. Import regulations are especially tricky and can leave your costing in disarray if not taken care of in advance.

Here are a few points for you to look at and grasp the implications that they entail.

Understanding which devices are allowed to be shipped and which need special permissions also helps you maintain the guarantees and warranties in question.

8. Seal it Tight

In the end, once all electronics are in a box, how you seal the package is what shall be the real differentiator. All the seams and flaps should be duly covered, ending up in an H-shaped look. You can even add some tape in diagonal stretches for added protection. The corners can be delicate, so going the extra mile there wouldn’t hurt anyone.

While packing tape is the staple in shipping, when dealing with an electronic shipment, you may want to think about using water-activated tape. The difference in the water-activated tape is that once it comes in contact, it will create a bond, sealing the shipment in a way that any tampering is distinctively evident.

When sealed correctly, the tape should form as a support to the whole box and maintain its integrity throughout the transit.

Conclusion

With Tigerpak, all you need to worry about is where do you need the electronics to go. Everything right from the boxes to the packaging is taken care of. You’ll never need to think about their safety, come what may. Furthermore, should you ever need any assistance in deciphering the complex shipping methods, we are always on standby to give it all.
